Tribe Maya Fire – Oakville
www.bellyup.ca
BellyUpBellyDance Studio launched American Tribal Style Dance 2 years ago with the very well recognized ATS instructor and performer, Valizan. The program eventually spawned BellyUp’s first ATS dance troupe, Tribe Maya Fire, who now performs regularly with other BellyUp performers at many of the areas community festivals and events. The members come with a variety of dance backgrounds and are drawn to ATS for its proud and earthy style, developed by FatChanceBellyDance of California in the 1980’s. The dance form draws it’s movements, costuming and general inspiration from the Tribal cultures of the Middle East, Northern Africa, India and Spain. A unique aspect of the dance is group improvisation. Dancers learn a set vocabulary of movements, which are subtly cued by a leader to give the impression of a choreographed performance. Tribe Maya performs an improvised ATS piece for you tonight along with their instructor and mentor Valizan.
